Abstract

This study aims to identify teachers’ competency in developing students’ personality. Two hundred and ninety seven form four students randomly selected from six schools in Kuala Lumpur to participate in this study. Survey questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data. The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability for the instruments in this study was .947. Pearson correlation test indicates that there is a significant relationship between the score of teacher’s competency and the score of students’ personality development. Results of multiple linear regression analysis show that teaching commitment is the most important factor (β = .65, large effect) of teachers competency in developing students’ personality. Teachers’ skills in developing students’ personality (β = .59) and teachers as a facilitator (β = .57) and teachers’ skills in enhancing students’ motivation (β = .36) has moderate effect on developing students’ personality. This study shows the importance of a teacher to enhance his or her competency in developing students’ personality.
