Abstract

Performance appraisal is a method that can measure the quality of work among employees in an organization. As a teacher, an understanding of performance appraisal is essential in helping teachers increase their commitment to work. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of teachers’ understanding of performance appraisal and to analyze the relationship between teachers' understanding of performance evaluation and teachers’ commitment. This quantitative study involved 285 teachers in the Kuala Lipis, Pahang who were randomly selected as participants. The data were collected using questionnaire and then analyzed by using IBM SPSS version 21.0. This study uses both the descriptive and inferential statistics such as Independent Samples T-test, One-Way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that teachers' understanding of the three dimensions of performance evaluation were at a high level where the dimension mean of the assessment method was 5.50, the dimension of the assessment content reached 5.50 and the dimension of the performance assessment management reached a mean of 6.00. Based on the t-test and ANOVA analysis, there were significant differences in the level of understanding of performance appraisal based on demographic factor of gender (t = -2.232, df = 283, p <0.05) and period of teacher services with F value (df = 3, 281, P <0.05) = 23.84. The result of Pearson's correlation analysis showed that there was correlation between the three dimensions of performance evaluation with the teacher's commitment in which the evaluation content (r = 0.821), the value of the evaluation method (r = 0.689) and the performance management value                            (r = 0.811) <0.01. As an implication, this study can help teachers in identifying their level of self-understanding on performance appraisal which measures their own work outcome. This study will also help teachers to be aware of the process and flow of performance appraisal at their workplace.
