MINAT DAN KECENDERUNGAN PELAJAR PEREMPUAN TERHADAP SUKAN DI INSTITUT PENDIDIKAN GURU (IPG)

Abstract

This study is aimed at investgating interest in sports among female students at Teacher Training Institute (IPG). The study involved 222 female students. The instrument used for data collection is a survey. The findings show that the indoor sports most preferred were badminton (M=4.68), Ten Pin Bowling (M=4.17), and Futsal (M=3.58), while the outdoor sports most preferred were Handball (M=4.06), Athletics (M=3.87) and Netball (M=3.76). Furthermore, the female IPG students often involved themselves in playing Badminton (M=3.12). The main factor attracting the interest of female students to sport is the fitness factor (M=4.51) and health (M=4.56). The findings also show that the main factor hindering interest of female students in sport was the heavy cademic workload (M=4.00), male students’ monopoly of sports facilities (M=3.90), and the female students’preferences for other than sporting activities (M=3.40). Based on these findings, it was found that female students in IPG were more interested in and favored sports easily carried out such as Badminton and Handball. Their interest and preferences for sports suit their goals to partcipate in sports to improve their level of fitness and health. Interest and preferences of female IPG students need to be supported and encouraged. Besides that, IPG management must ensure that male IPG students do not monopolize sports arenas and similar courts.
