Abstract

This study aims to investigating the coaches’s leadership style favored by one of the Private Higher Education Institutions (IPTS) team sport athletes in Malaysia based on gender. A total of 107 team sport athletes aged between 19 and 22 years who had at least represented kolej in sports competitions and games were selected by purposive sampling. "Leadership Scale for Sport" (LSS) by Chelladurai and Saleh (1980) was used to identify the preferred leadership style of coaches team sport athletes based on gender differences. The results showed team sport male athletes was favored the the dimensions of training and instruction (mean=3.87, SD=0.56), followed by positive feedback dimensions (mean=3.73, SD=0.65), the democratic dimension (mean=3.51, SD=0.63), dimensions of social support (mean=3.48, SD=0.65) and the least interest was the autocratic dimension (mean=3.02, SD=0.94). While team sport female athletes was favored dimensions of training and instruction (mean=3.66, SD=0.69), followed by the positive feedback dimensions (mean=3.65, SD=0.76), the democratic dimension (mean=3.49, SD=0.42), dimensions of social support (mean=3.20, SD=0.77) and the least interest was the autocratic dimension (mean=3.20, SD=0.68). The independent t test showed no significant difference between the gender in the all dimension of leardership style favored by team sport athletes, with p > .05. This research has revealed that dimensions of training and instruction style is preferred by one of the Private Higher Education Institutions team sport athletes based on gender and have indicated some recommendation and suggestions for further studies.
