Abstract

Leadership and school climate are essential to ensure the successful of a school. These two constructs are a group and shared perceptions, as well as an important mechanisms influencing employees’ performance. The purpose of this study was to (1) explain the relationship between leadership and school climate on the performance of Islamic Education teachers, and (2) examine the impact of leadership and school climate simultaneously, to identify which factor is a more dominant predictor on Islamic Education teachers’ performance. The study sample consisted of Islamic Education teachers from secondary schools throughout Malaysia (N = 418 out of 82 schools). Given the multilevel nature of the data, where individuals nested in organizations, HLM 7 (Hierarchical Linear Modeling) software was used. The results showed that leadership and school climate were significantly positively related to Islamic Education teachers’ performance when assessed separately. However when both constructs were analyzed simultaneously, school climate affected Islamic Education teachers’ performance more than leadership. These findings showed that although the two constructs were considered to improve teachers’ performance, but it was proved that the school climate was affecting Islamic Education teachers’ performance more compared to leadership.
