The Importance of Munāsabāt in Understanding the Qur’an

Abstract

There is no doubt that the science of munāsabāt (the study of coherence and relationships within the Qur’an) is among the most important disciplines serving the Noble Qur’an, as it reveals its profound realities that cannot be fully accessed without it. It is a noble and highly beneficial science, indispensable to any student of the Qur’an regardless of their academic or cultural level. Imam al-Suyūṭī (may Allah have mercy on him) stated: “The science of munāsabah is a noble discipline to which few exegetes have devoted attention due to its subtlety.” The Noble Qur’an is a rich source of diverse sciences and various branches of knowledge, and the science of munāsabāt serves as a key to unlocking them. It demonstrates the miraculous coherence of the Qur’anic structure and the harmony between its chapters and verses, to the extent that the reader perceives the verses and surahs as perfectly arranged and intricately interconnected. This greatly assists in achieving a deeper understanding and clearer comprehension of their meanings. Through this, one attains intellectual and spiritual reassurance by recognizing the close interrelationship between the rulings of the Shariah and, for example, the wisdom behind repetition in Qur’anic narratives. As Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (may Allah have mercy on him) remarked, most of the subtleties of the Qur’an are embedded in its arrangements and interconnections. Thus, the relationship of the science of munāsabāt to Qur’anic exegesis is akin to that of rhetoric (ʿilm al-bayān) to grammar. This paper is a modest attempt to shed light on certain aspects of this precious and highly valuable discipline, as well as the efforts undertaken by scholars in documenting it. The discussion is presented briefly through an introduction, three main sections, and a conclusion, in the hope that it may serve as a starting point for those who wish to explore it further.
