Abstract

In light of an increasingly complex world and emerging concepts such as globalization, good governance, and sustainable development, it has become necessary to critically examine modern economics—with its various theories—to understand why developmental theories have succeeded in developed countries yet failed in many third-world nations. The aim of this research is to explore the nature of the relationship between good governance and sustainable development, and to examine how contemporary global variables influence the character and quality of this relationship. The paper begins with a conceptual framework of the topic’s components, then proceeds analytically to the indicators and dimensions that affect the relationship between good governance and sustainable development in today’s world, ultimately identifying an optimal framework through which sustainable economic development can be achieved under good governance. The study adopts a descriptive approach in presenting the conceptual framework, an analytical approach in examining the relevant indicators and dimensions, and a comparative approach in highlighting differences among various experiences. The findings indicate that the conceptual framework requires refinement, particularly as concepts are influenced by factors such as environment, translation, and inclusiveness. The study also reveals that the multiplicity of indicators used by international organizations—along with their lack of uniformity, differing levels of influence, and the difficulty of measurement—constitute misleading factors in statistical studies, thereby complicating the construction of guiding models. The study concludes by affirming that, under optimal global conditions, the relationship between good governance and sustainable development is complementary and mutually reinforcing. Governments can play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development if political will is present, by adopting the key elements of good governance: accountability, justice, transparency, and independence.
