The Development of Arabic Grammar in Egypt and the Levant: An Analysis of the Contributions of the Scholars

The extensive grammatical opinions and intellectual contributions left by the schools of Basra, Kufa, and Baghdad eventually gave rise to another significant tradition, frequently discussed by historians. This tradition took root in the lands of Egypt and the Levant and later became known as the Egyptian and Levantine school of grammar. Initially, the scholars of Egypt and the Levant selected and supported whichever earlier schools they preferred. Over time, however, they began to weigh the various opinions, exercise tarjih (preferential judgment), and produce their own views in the formulation and resolution of grammatical issues. The research method employed in this study is library-based research. Through this method, all referenced and collected data are derived from library materials related to the topic. The sources consulted include both primary and secondary materials deemed reliable. The findings of the study confirm that the contributions of the scholars within this school were substantial, elevating the status of the Egyptian and Levantine tradition to stand alongside the earlier grammatical schools. This tradition flourished in the 4th century Hijri, declined by the 9th century Hijri, and later experienced a revival in the 15th century Hijri, continuing to the present day.
