Artikel ini membincangkan mengenai sejarah awal penerbitan majalah Pengasuh khususnya pada tahun 1918. Seperti majalah lain yang sezaman, fokus utama penulis Pengasuh terhadap persoalan islah dan perubahan sikap serta cara hidup orang Melayu pada awal abad ke-20. Dalam membincangkan secara ringkas sejarah penerbitan Pengasuh pada tahun pertama penerbitanya, tema-tema utama yang terdapat dalam setiap keluaran Pengasuh pada tahun 1918 turut diperkatakan. Artikel ini juga mengulas beberapa artikel yang dipilih dari Pengasuh tahun 1918 yang membincangkan mengenai faktor kemajuan dan kemunduran bangsa Melayu pada ketika itu
