Abstract

Security is a fundamental issue in the life of human society. It is a primary objective for every member of society, as the assurance of security provides broad opportunities for development and progress. Conversely, a society and nation that lack security due to serious criminal threats are in reality weak and dysfunctional, having failed to safeguard this essential pillar of life. Has Malaysia become entangled in such a crisis of dysfunction today? Who is responsible for ensuring security, and by what means? How does Islam teach the concept of human and societal security? This paper seeks to draw attention to the significant role of Islam in the mission of security and well-being, both conceptually and in terms of its practical mechanisms. However, since some national leaders are not prepared to adopt Islam as a framework for governance, the role of Islam is not clearly manifested in our society, including in efforts to address the increasingly critical problem of crime. It is hoped that this paper will help provide a foundational overview of how Islam can contribute to achieving security and addressing various forms of criminal activity—not necessarily to eliminate crime entirely, as that would be unrealistic—but to effectively manage and reduce it, God willing.
