Abstract

The Professional Learning Community (PLC) is a new learning approach nowadays aimed at increasing achievement and school improvement through the sharing of knowledge, skills, and expertise between administrators, teachers, and the outside community. Professional learning communities formally function as professional learning teams, and through these teams, teachers work with an open spirit, reflect critically, share experiences, ideas, expertise, and engage in a continuous evaluation process that promotes deep team learning. Therefore, it is important to look at previous studies related to PLC because it is one of the factors in the effectiveness of teachers' teaching in schools. This research paper aims to produce a literature review to find out the factors that influence the practice of professional learning communities among teachers and the challenges in the implementation of professional learning communities. Meanwhile, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was adopted for the review of the current research which utilized two main journal databases, namely Scopus and ERIC. Accordingly, the searching effort resulted in a total of 20 articles that can be analyses systematically. Most importantly, the review managed to formulate three main themes namely leadership style, culture in the organization and emotional well-being of the school organization based on thematic analysis. Finally, some recommendations have been presented at the end of this study for the reference of future scholars.
