Misconceptions Regarding the Issue of Qunut Recitation: An Analysis from the Perspective of the Muhaddithin and the Ijtihad of the Fuqaha’

Abstract

The issue of Qunut recitation in prayer is among the matters that have generated intense debate between those who accept it and those who reject it. This issue is discussed based on references to hadith as well as the views of scholars from various legal schools (madhāhib). Through documentation and library research methods, data were collected and analyzed using inductive and deductive approaches. This article aims to identify the points of difference and similarity in discussions concerning Qunut recitation in prayer, particularly in the Fajr and Witr prayers. The foundation of the discussion involves compiling hadiths related to Qunut recitation, followed by presenting the interpretations of hadith scholars in explaining these narrations. At the same time, the views of jurists from different legal schools are presented, along with the principles underlying their discussions and the ijtihad they have exercised. Through comparative analysis, this study seeks to harmonize the perspectives of those who reject and those who accept Qunut recitation in prayer. The findings reveal that there are notable differences between the discussions presented by hadith scholars and the foundational ijtihad employed by jurists or legal school scholars. Nevertheless, both perspectives are grounded in strong evidentiary bases and may be followed in religious practice.
