Hamka was an Indonesian scholar who made significant contributions to the field of knowledge, particularly in Qur’anic exegesis, by completing a commentary on all 30 juzʾ of the Qur’an entitled Tafsir al-Azhar. This article aims to examine Hamka’s perspective on envy (ḥasad) and arrogance (takabbur) through his Tafsir al-Azhar. This qualitative study employs a data collection method by gathering Qur’anic verses related to envy and arrogance and applying a deductive approach to elaborate on Hamka’s discussions concerning these themes. Hamka’s interpretation in Tafsir al-Azhar clearly emphasizes the explanation of envy and arrogance by relating them to the socio-historical realities of his time. The findings of this study indicate that Hamka’s interpretations of envy and arrogance provide various dimensions of understanding and clear explanations, highlighting that both are spiritual diseases that must be treated promptly so as not to negatively affect one’s life in this world and the Hereafter. This is because they carry serious ultimate consequences for a Muslim, potentially leading to Hell if left unchecked. In addressing these issues, Hamka frequently connects them to contemporary situations in order to offer readers of his tafsir a deeper and more relevant understanding.
