The Contributions of Haji Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Kelantani (1887–1967 CE) in the Field of Qur’anic Studies

Abstract

Haji Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Kelantani was one of the prominent scholars of the state of Kelantan who actively propagated the sciences of the Qur’an after returning from his studies in Makkah. His love for knowledge motivated him to pursue studies abroad. His work Muqaddimah al-Mubtadi fi Tajwid al-Quran was written to present to the community the sciences of tajwid and qira’at. This study aims to introduce Haji Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Kelantani and his work, Muqaddimah al-Mubtadi fi Tajwid al-Quran, as well as to examine the methodology employed in its composition. The principles of tajwid that he presented are also analyzed as part of the study’s findings. Among the topics he discussed are the rulings of nun sakinah and tanwin, makharij al-huruf (articulation points of letters), al-mad wa al-qasr (elongation and shortening), and al-waqf wa al-ibtida’ (pausing and beginning in recitation). The researcher employed both library and field research methodologies, incorporating historical, documentary, and interview methods to achieve the outlined objectives. It is hoped that this study will contribute to the field of Qur’anic studies. Haji Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Kelantani was a distinguished scholar who rendered significant service during his lifetime, and it is hoped that his efforts will be emulated and continued by Muslims in Malaysia in promoting understanding of the sciences of the Qur’an.
